Every year, right about now, my phone starts ringing.
“Do we need to book right now for 2027?”
“I heard senior pictures HAVE to be done in the summer.”
“Are we already behind?”
Take a deep breath. You’re not late. And you’re definitely not doing it wrong.
Let’s clear something up first, because this is where most of the panic comes from.
The only reason senior portraits need to be taken in the summer is if your school requires a photo submission for the yearbook by an early fall deadline.
That’s it. Full stop.
If you don’t need your portraits for the yearbook?
You have your entire senior year to create something meaningful.
As a Fort Worth senior photographer, I actually encourage families to choose a season that fits your senior’s personality, style, and schedule , not just what TikTok or your neighbor said.
Let’s walk through the pros and cons of each season so you can make a confident decision instead of a rushed one.
(Popular for a reason — but not the only option)
Why families choose summer:
More relaxed schedules without school, sports, or homework
Early access to portraits for graduation announcements
Lush greenery and long daylight hours
Seniors often feel less stressed before the year begins
Things to consider:
Texas heat is real (especially for outdoor sessions)
Hair, makeup, and comfort matter more in high temps
Some seniors don’t feel “ready” yet emotionally - and that’s okay
💡 Best for: Seniors who need yearbook photos, want everything done early, or feel most themselves during summer break.
(One of my absolute favorites)
Why fall works beautifully:
Cooler weather (finally)
Rich, warm tones that photograph beautifully
Seniors are more settled into their identity by this point
Sports, band, and activities are in full swing, great storytelling opportunities
Things to consider:
Schedules can get busy with school commitments
Fall dates fill quickly (planning ahead helps)
💡 Best for: Seniors who love cozy vibes, rich colors, and feeling fully “in” their senior year.
(Underrated and incredibly striking)
Why winter can be magical:
Dramatic light and moodier, fine-art looks
More flexibility on the calendar
Seniors often feel more confident by mid-year
Perfect for studio sessions or styled outdoor looks
Things to consider:
Shorter daylight hours
Weather can be unpredictable (but that’s what planning is for)
💡 Best for: Seniors who love a more editorial, timeless look or prefer an indoor studio experience.
(A beautiful send-off)
Why spring sessions are special:
Blooms, soft light, and fresh energy
Seniors are fully themselves by this point
A powerful way to mark the transition into graduation
Feels celebratory and reflective all at once
Things to consider:
Tight timelines, graduation is approaching
Not ideal if yearbook deadlines have passed
💡 Best for: Seniors who want to honor the end of this chapter, not rush the beginning.
The best time is when:
Your senior feels like themselves
Your schedule allows space to enjoy the experience
You’re not rushing just to check a box
Senior portraits aren’t just about photos.
They’re about who your senior is becoming.
And that deserves intention, not panic.
Whether you’re planning summer, fall, winter, or spring senior portraits in Fort Worth or the surrounding DFW area, I walk my clients through the entire process so nothing feels overwhelming or last-minute.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You just need someone who knows how to guide you.
