Where to Take Fall Family Portraits in Fort Worth

Every fall, families start asking me the same question:

Where should we take our family pictures in Fort Worth?

And honestly, Fort Worth gives us a LOT of options.

You can have golden grass and trees, something unmistakably Texas, beautiful architecture, an urban downtown feel or skip worrying about Texas weather altogether and photograph your family in the studio.

But here’s the thing I always tell my clients:

Don’t choose a location just because it’s pretty.

Choose it because it feels like your family and because you love how it will look hanging in your home.

As a Fort Worth family photographer, part of my job is helping you plan all of that before we ever start photographing. Location, wardrobe, lighting, the feeling you want from your portraits and what you eventually want to do with them all matter.

So if you’re searching for the best places to take fall family pictures in Fort Worth, here are some of my favorites and a few things I want you to think about before choosing yours.

1. Fort Worth Stockyards for Family Pictures With a Texas Feel

If you want your family portraits to actually look like they were taken in Fort Worth, the Stockyards are hard to beat.

Brick streets. Wood. Cactus. Western architecture. Interesting textures. Tons of personality.

The Stockyards work especially well for families who don't want the traditional family-standing-in-a-field look.

And you do NOT have to show up wearing matching cowboy hats.

Unless that's your thing. Then absolutely show up in the hats.

I love this location with denim, boots, leather, rich neutral colors and wardrobe that has a little personality. We can make it feel polished and sophisticated, Western, editorial or casual depending on your family.

If you want fall family photos in Fort Worth that feel like Fort Worth, this is a really fun option.

2. Airfield Falls for Natural Fall Family Photos

If you're picturing trees, open areas, trails and that softer outdoor look, Airfield Falls is a beautiful option for outdoor family pictures in Fort Worth.

There's also a waterfall, which gives us something a little more interesting than just finding a random patch of grass and calling it a day.

This location works especially well if you have kids who need a little room to MOVE.

One of the biggest mistakes families make before their session is thinking we need their children to stand perfectly still, look at the camera and smile for an hour.

Please don't make yourself crazy trying to make that happen.

I want personality. I want connection. I want the little things your kids do right now that you're going to miss someday.

We'll get the beautiful family portrait where everybody is looking at me.

But I want the other stuff too.

3. Trinity Park for Classic Fort Worth Fall Family Portraits

Trinity Park gives us trees, trails, open spaces and lots of variety without leaving Fort Worth.

If you want something classic and natural, this is a great option.

It's especially beautiful when we get later into fall and North Texas finally decides to participate in the season.

Because let's be honest.

Texas fall does whatever Texas fall wants.

Sometimes we're wearing sweaters in November.

Sometimes we're sweating.

We work with it.

That's also why I don't want my clients choosing a location based solely on whether someone promises there will be orange leaves on a specific date. Fall color in Fort Worth can vary from year to year.

Beautiful light, interesting scenery and your family matter a whole lot more.

4. Fort Worth Botanic Garden for Something More Polished

If you want greenery and nature but prefer something more manicured than an open field, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden gives us a completely different feel.

There are gardens, pathways, architectural elements, water and different textures throughout the property.

This can work beautifully with a more polished wardrobe if you want your final family portraits to feel a little more formal or fine art.

And this is where thinking about your HOME becomes important.

If you're planning a large piece of wall art for a formal living room, I want to know that before your session.

The clothes you wear and the location we choose should make sense with the artwork we're creating.

Your portrait doesn't stop being important when I press the shutter.

We're creating something you're going to live with.

5. The Fort Worth Cultural District for Modern Family Pictures

Not every fall family portrait needs pumpkins and orange trees.

If your house is modern and your personal style is cleaner, architectural or fashion-forward, let's create something that actually fits that.

The Fort Worth Cultural District gives us beautiful architecture, clean lines and a completely different look from a traditional outdoor family session.

This is one of the reasons I don't believe there's one “best” family photo location in Fort Worth.

The best location is the one that makes sense for your family.

6. Downtown Fort Worth for Urban Family Portraits

Give me a family with some style and downtown Fort Worth can be SO GOOD.

Buildings, streets, interesting light, architecture and movement can create family portraits that feel much more editorial than traditional.

This is especially fun with older kids and teenagers.

And if your kids are at that age where the thought of putting on matching outfits and standing in a field makes everyone want to fake an illness…

Maybe don't do that.

Your family portraits are allowed to have personality.

7. My Fort Worth Portrait Studio

And then there is my personal favorite option when Texas decides to be Texas:

the studio.

No wind.

No humidity.

No wondering if it's going to rain.

No trying to figure out whether the sun is going to cooperate.

And no sweating through your fall sweater because Fort Worth decided it should be 87 degrees outside.

Please don't start by deciding everyone needs to match.

Coordinate instead.

I usually recommend starting with one person's outfit and building the family's wardrobe around it.

Think about texture. Layers. Movement. Different shades within a color palette.

And again, think about where these portraits are going.

If your house is filled with creams, warm woods and earthy colors, let's think about that when we're planning wardrobe.

If your home is bold and colorful, we have completely different options.

Your location, wardrobe and finished artwork should all feel like they belong together.

Earlier than most people think.

October and November are incredibly popular months for family photography in Fort Worth, especially because families are also thinking about holiday cards, Christmas gifts and getting everybody together before the end of the year.

And if you want your finished portraits or wall art back before Christmas, waiting until December to start thinking about your session isn't ideal.
