Sometimes you don’t realize how badly you needed to get away until you’re sitting on the porch of a cabin overlooking Palo Duro Canyon, drinking coffee, laughing with women you barely knew a few days ago and thinking…
Oh. I needed this.
That was probably my biggest takeaway from hosting my first women’s photography retreat in Palo Duro Canyon.
I knew I wanted to create something different. I didn’t want a packed itinerary where everyone was running from one activity to the next. I didn’t want a photography workshop. I didn’t want a traditional wellness retreat where you’re waking up at sunrise for yoga and spending the afternoon doing group exercises.
I wanted to create a space for women to rest, explore, laugh, make new friends, feel beautiful and have one hell of an experience.
And yes, I wanted to make incredible portraits of them too.
A women’s photography retreat combines the escape and connection of a women’s getaway with a personalized portrait experience.
But at least at my retreats, you do not need to be a photographer.
You’re the one in front of the camera.
My retreat guests came to Palo Duro Canyon to get away from normal life for a few days. We stayed together in a cabin overlooking the canyon, explored, ate together, laughed a LOT sat on the porch having conversations and, of course, created some pretty freaking incredible portraits.
Some of the sessions were whimsical and ethereal with dramatic dresses moving through the canyon.
Others were bold, editorial and a little badass.
Because women aren’t one thing.
You can be soft and strong. Feminine and wild. Quiet and ridiculous. You can want to sit on the porch with coffee one morning and go exploring the canyon the next.
That’s kind of the point.
I think a lot of women reach a point where they realize they spend an incredible amount of their lives taking care of everybody else.
Their kids.
Their businesses.
Their husbands.
Their employees.
Their parents.
Their homes.
Their never-ending list of things that need to get done.
Even vacations can become another thing to manage.
A women’s retreat creates something completely different: space.
Space where you don’t have to be responsible for everybody.
Space to have conversations without watching the clock.
Space to explore somewhere beautiful.
Space to sit your butt on a porch and do absolutely nothing if that’s what you feel like doing.
And space to step in front of a camera and have somebody else worry about making you look incredible.
That last part matters to me.
As a Fort Worth portrait photographer, I spend so much of my life working with women who tell me they aren’t photogenic, they need to lose weight first, they hate being photographed or they’re usually the person behind the camera.
Then I get to show them something different.
One of my favorite things about the retreat was that we didn't overschedule it.
There were portrait sessions planned, obviously. That’s the part where I take over.
We chose different areas around Palo Duro Canyon and created portraits that actually belonged in that landscape—not something that could have been photographed in a random field back home.
But outside of the photography?
We had room to breathe.
You could explore. Hike. Go horseback riding. Sit on the porch. Drink wine. Talk. Laugh. Go find something fun to do. Or decide you weren’t doing a damn thing that afternoon.
There was no pressure to perform or participate in every second of the trip.
And something really beautiful happened because of that.
Women connected.
Some of my favorite memories from the entire retreat weren’t during the portrait sessions. They were sitting on that porch, looking out over the canyon and talking about life.
That view never got old.
Neither did the laughter.
This is probably one of the biggest questions women have when considering a portrait retreat.
“What if I’m awkward in pictures?”
Welcome to the club.
You do not need to arrive knowing what to do with your hands. You don’t need modeling experience. You don't need to practice posing in your bathroom mirror.
That’s my job.
I guide my clients through posing, movement, expression and all of the tiny adjustments that make a huge difference in a portrait.
The same philosophy I use for my women’s portrait sessions in Fort Worth comes with me to the canyon.
You get to show up.
I worry about the rest.
And sometimes the confidence doesn’t happen before the portrait session.
Sometimes it happens because of it.
I love a girls’ trip.
But six months later, what do you usually have from it?
A handful of cell phone pictures, one group selfie where somebody hates the way they look and maybe a credit card statement you’d rather not discuss.
A women’s portrait retreat is different.
You still get the laughter, ridiculous conversations, beautiful scenery, adventures and friendships.
But you also come home with portraits from this chapter of your life.
Not because you finally lost the weight.
Not because you turned a certain age.
Not because somebody else needed pictures.
Because your life right now is worth remembering too.
That might be my favorite part of all of this.
Honestly?
The woman who read this and immediately thought, I need this.
Maybe your kids are older and you're finally starting to figure out what life looks like when everything isn't centered around raising them.
Maybe you own a business and your brain never shuts off.
Maybe you’ve been craving adventure.
Maybe you want to meet other women.
Maybe you haven't had beautiful portraits of yourself in years.
Or maybe you don’t need some giant life-changing reason.
Maybe going somewhere beautiful, laughing until your stomach hurts, getting dressed up, creating ridiculous memories and having incredible portraits made sounds really freaking fun.
That is enough.
YES.
After hosting my first women’s retreat at Palo Duro Canyon, I knew almost immediately that this wasn’t going to be a one-time thing.
I love nature.
I love adventure.
I love resting.
I love laughing.
I love helping women feel beautiful and confident.
I love creating experiences people remember.
And I especially love creating space for the woman who does everything for everybody else to spend a few days where she gets to focus on herself.
This retreat somehow brought all of those things together.
So I’m already working on the next ones.
If you’ve been searching for a women’s retreat in Texas, a women’s photography retreat, a girls’ getaway in Palo Duro Canyon or a destination portrait experience, and you’re thinking, Okay Jenny, this sounds like me…
Reach out.
I’d love to tell you where we’re going next.
No. My retreats are portrait experiences for women who want to be photographed, not photography workshops. You do not need to own a camera or know anything about photography.
Absolutely not. Most of my clients are everyday women, not professional models. I guide you through posing, movement and expression throughout your portrait session.
My first retreat was held at Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, where we stayed in a cabin overlooking the canyon and created portraits throughout the surrounding landscape. Future retreat locations may change because adventure is part of the fun.
The experience can include everything from whimsical, ethereal portraits with dramatic dresses to bold editorial, Western or more alternative looks. The goal isn't for every woman to look the same. Your portraits should still feel like you.
No. You can absolutely come by yourself. Part of the experience is meeting other women, sharing the adventure and making connections along the way. You don't need to convince three friends to come with you before you say yes to yourself.
